surrounding scenery is of such unmistakable beauty — in this case, the green velvet hills of Maui and the shimmering ocean beyond – buildings must sit gently on the landscape. Low-slung, sculptural, and free of tropical design clichés, the ultramodern home of glass, steel, and wood designed by San Francisco-based Walker Warner Architects for a couple of empty nesters who first met on the Hawaiian island decades ago is low-slung, sculptural, and free of tropical design clichés.

Beginning with a perforated metal canopy that leads to the front door and casts shadow patterns on the neighbouring board-formed concrete walls, artistic screening components define the views and manage the play of light. Internally, moveable vertical wood louvres gracefully partition sections and filter sunlight as it enters interior rooms.

Natural materials dominate the warm, elegant interiors by Leverone Design, also of San Francisco, beginning with reclaimed teak floors and wire-brushed bald cypress walls. The furnishings are primarily monochrome and sparsely distributed so as not to detract from the surroundings. A collection of minimalist art, collected at international art fairs expressly for this residence, is juxtaposed with tailored, upholstered seats, carefully considered one-of-a-kind furnishings, and mid-century classics, including chairs by Willie Guhl, Finn Juhl, and Pierre Jeanneret.

timbers dominate the kitchen, from a massive teak island to bleached and wire-brushed cypress cabinetry. The dining room’s dramatic outlines of Jeanneret chairs and a huge live-edge slab table stand up to the view that unfolds behind the glass.

In the beamed living room, a biomorphic sectional with brass-wrapped base lies over a silk shagged rug. A pair of swivel chairs by Yabu Pushelberg surround a Christian Liaigre cedar coffee table, with Korean artist Young-Il Ahn’s interesting oil, a rectangle of subtle gradations in black, completing the tableau.

When it comes to decorating such an innately dramatic space, more than enough is more than enough. A transitional space between indoors and out, for example, is focused on just two pieces: a charred wood bench by Belgian artist Kaspar Hamacher and “Exposed Painting Oriental Blue,” an oil on linen painting by Scottish abstract painter Callum Innes.

Sumptuous bathtubs with interestingly shaped freestanding tubs and tactile board-formed concrete walls, similar to those seen in the minimalist outdoor shower and along the entry path, are located in desirable corners of the construction.

A James Perse sofa and armchairs, casually slipcovered in ivory linen, rest on a jute rug, expanding the natural-materials palette in the largely monochromatic family room.
