We wouldn’t be at the start of a New Year if we didn’t have a piece dedicated to the home’s impending trends in the months ahead. I write one every year, and I have to admit, this is my favourite yet. You all know how much the phrase ‘trend’ makes me tremble when it comes to interior design, and ‘hurrah’ this year there’s no evidence of what colour metallic you should be using, pineapples, peacocks, or any other birds, flamingo or otherwise! This year is going to be a breath of new air! Without further ado, here are my 2022 interior design trend predictions.

This naturally leads to secondhand and vintage items. Demand is increasing, but production is decreasing. We’re still not out of the woods when it comes to getting back on our feet in the retail world. I can tell you that there is a lot more to it than you think, having ran a manufacturing firm abroad and dealing with the infuriatingly tedious necessity of importing that comes with it. Manufacturing all around the world came to a halt the moment Covid was discovered. As a result, the number of container ships on the water at any given moment has decreased.

Container costs skyrocketed when production slowly began to recover as a result of this. However, when competition for fewer capacity on container ships increased, shipping prices skyrocketed to levels I haven’t seen in over 20 years. When you factor in the increase in fuel prices, it’s going to be a long road back. It’s likely that the time it took us to manufacture a container load in Indonesia and receive it in Southampton would have doubled. And that would be absolutely out of my control; the shipping lines will not do anything to speed things up unless you are a major (and I mean massive) corporation. You simply wait until a slot becomes available. As a result, an increasing number of individuals are turning to online marketplaces, with the added bonus of getting a one-of-a-kind piece for your house that is right in front of you and requires no waiting.

As a result, the recycling industry will experience a surge. This movement, which is already well-known, I believe will gain traction in 2022. People have had more free time at home and have taken advantage of it by learning new skills such as upcycling. It also properly connects to the vintage and second-hand movements. It’s great to find one-of-a-kind items on the internet, but they’re not necessarily the exact colour you’re looking for. As a result, a lick of paint can turn the ordinary into something extraordinary. You don’t have to paint something just because you can. Oh, and don’t forget to sell the items you no longer want. After all, one man’s trash is another man’s gold.

Flexible living is another significant trend that has been gradually developing and shows no signs of slowing down. Our homes are still working hard for us, more than ever, with dual purpose rooms. I don’t know about you, but before to 2020, my home felt quite spacious. However, after spending the previous two years caged up in it with four other people, it feels smaller by the day. As a result, there’s a trend toward multitasking in our rooms without putting everything on display. Consider desks that can also be used as a wardrobe.Outside kitchens for parties and get-togethers (bring your own alcohol:-) A playroom as well as a quiet space. Finding a work-life balance has never been more difficult, but brands are catching on and assisting us in finding answers.

Brands will finally stand up and take responsibility for their own designs and behaviours this year, which is a welcome development. We, the consumers, have screamed, and they have finally heeded our pleas, with more and more environmentally friendly products entering the market. And where once’sustainable’ meant ‘fugly,’ brands are now not only generating fantastic designs, but ones that are actually unique and beautiful as well. I wholeheartedly support this, and I hope that you, like me, will continue to seek for the most sustainable choice.

Texture and shape will be important in 2022. Consider upholstered furniture with curved and circular shapes and rich textural fabrics. I believe there is a link here with our busy houses as well. Curves make a room flow by softening its edges. Even when there is the same quantity of furniture in a space, it appears to be less crowded. With a variety of soft furnishings in boucles, velvets, silks, and other materials, you may create a room that will soothe the cockles of even the most brain-fried multitasker.
