Every year on December 26th, I can’t wait to take down our Christmas decorations and start fresh! There’s something so liberating about starting with a clean slate for me. Winter in Michigan, in particular, may be bitterly cold, gloomy, and dry. We’re spending more time at home as snowstorms rage and we’re forced to slow down. Which, if you know anything about me or my brain, you know is a challenging undertaking. However, it’s not so horrible when you have a warm house to retreat to, and I’ve been working hard this month to appreciate a slower pace of life that I haven’t experienced in a long time.
We had a snag in all of this refresh this week since we had a magazine come to the house to photograph for…CHRISTMAS! Yes, we’re back at White Cottage Farm for a day photography to prepare for Christmas. Despite the rush and bustle, I’m working on fresh vignettes and stylings for our home. So today on White Cottage Farm, I’m showcasing our cosy winter home update. It’s a little bit of Christmas, a little bit of winter, and a lot of cosiness!

Because we spend more time inside during the winter months, we try to use this time to tick stuff off our to-do list around the house. Painting our rooms, patching holes on the walls, and making a list of our house goals for the year. Because we are always renovating our 1800’s farmhouse, having areas that feel the most “completed” at the time is something I strive for. While I enjoy the idea of not decorating for the winter, I also enjoy adding neutral winter decor to our home.

Refresh Your Bedroom
We often ignore our bedrooms because it isn’t a common gathering place, but I believe it is critical to include our bedrooms when updating our home. It’s where we lay our heads at night, and even if we’re stressed or worried about anything, the bedroom should be a soothing area where we can forget about it all and focus on ourselves. So this year I set out on a mission to decorate and refurbish our comfortable winter bedroom. The whole blog article and sources may be found here.

Refreshing the Library
Recently, our library room has gotten a lot of attention. I’ve been working from this room on a regular basis, and it’s been fantastic to have a central location for everything during the day. On the blog, I showed the custom colour we painted last week [HERE] as well as my neutral book collection.
This arrangement has been in our kitchen since before Christmas, and I adore it. However, I wanted to add more greens for the photography that took place at our house this week, as well as for general winter decoration. Bringing greenery into our home makes me so joyful and hopeful for nicer weather at this time of year.

Refresh Your Mudroom
During the winter, mudrooms can feel hopeless when it comes to styling. I’ve been thinking a lot about how this place can better serve our family now that we have a toddler who adores playing in the snow. At the same time, keep everything (or try to keep everything) dry. We’ll be using all of the peg rails, so I added this day bed as an extra location to congregate and get snow gear on and off.

We’ll be prepping our homes for spring in no time at all. While I prefer remaining at home and slowing down during the winter months, I must admit that I am eager to start planning our garden and spending time outside. For the time being… I’ll try not to get ahead of myself and instead appreciate the current season. Do you prefer to spruce up your living environment during the winter? What do you do each year to make your houses feel particularly warm and inviting? I’d love to hear from you on Facebook or Instagram. I hope my warm winter home update has inspired you in some way and given you a better idea of how I like to decorate in the winter. Thank you for dropping by today, and every day!
