SERENITY…
In this East Hampton beach home, drenched with natural light and swathed in cool neutral tones that echo the sweeping majesty of the coastal environment, comfort and an engulfing feeling of finely-tuned elegance reign supreme. The property was built in the 1990s and has been rebuilt to represent the couple’s shared appreciation of mid-century, modern, and contemporary art and design. It is owned by a New York-based couple who are enthusiastic art collectors. Timothy Godbold, a renowned Hampton-based designer, is responsible for bringing their vision to reality. His instinctive approach to the delicate interplay of space, shape, luminosity, and colour has earned him international praise.
APPLYING…
Godbold has designed airy and inviting interiors that exhibit a strong relationship between architectural and tonal components, bringing his characteristic simplicity to this costal property. Indeed, his clean design lines give rooms a new’shape,’ while organic forms like an arch’s curve and the smooth roundness of sculpted artworks bring to life the ornamental subtleties of the house’s more structural features, such as the inky gloss of its painted hardwood flooring.
FUSING…
Godbold has created a soft streamlined style that segues smoothly from room to room, from ultra-modern kitchen to calm lounge area and beyond, using strong linear lines of wood, stone, and glossy surfaces with an undeniable lightness of touch. The looping pattern of an abstract artwork by Brooklyn-based artist Louis Fratino is paired with modern designer Ted Abramczyk’s sleek cylinder lamps and Claude Conover’s tactile mid-century stoneware vases in the master bedroom. This carefully-curated combination of antique and modern objects – mixed with handmade Godbold furniture – build up like a collage, giving this one-of-a-kind house with individuality as well as a tangible feeling of intimacy and privacy.
AESTHETICALLY…
The library area, with its strong visual flow of geometric shapes disturbed by splashes of colour and tactile surfaces that generate a sense of safety, comfort, and privacy by the beach, exemplifies how each room harmonises conflicting styles and textures.
