Tips for Organizing Small Spaces Creating Space for Your Passions

Tips for Organizing Small Spaces Creating Space for Your Passions

Addressing our demand for dish and hospitality storage is one of the most critical space issues for me in our kitchen redesign. Our house isn't enormous (but is it little! ), so I have to be careful about how we use it. I don't like clutter, but I do appreciate having lovely things to look at and utilize for entertaining. Clutter, in my opinion, is something you don't use or like. If you don't make space for the things you love, they become misplaced or become clutter, and you don't utilise them! If you adore something, don't allow it become a blight! Our movers dubbed us "book and décor" people when we moved into our last home. Ha! Some individuals, it appears, are decorators. Some people are bookworms. And we are the unique individuals that adore BOTH! I'm not aware of it! If he had peeked in our boxes, he could have labelled me as a DISHES person! 🙂 I don't have as many as others, but I do enjoy having a few sets of mix-and-match dishes and serving pieces such as cake...

Mudrooms with Style and Function

Mudrooms with Style and Function

When we get the opportunity, we love to create mudrooms.   Originally seen in farmhouses in the 19th century, mudrooms served as backrooms for farmers to remove their dirty garments between the outside world and the household. Today's mudrooms have a slightly different appearance and purpose. Though they are not required in every home, having a location to enter, rinse off your boots, and store your belongings is the ultimate luxury in areas with damp or muddy conditions. It's all about combining beauty and functionality when designing a mudroom. Finding some inspiration might be a great place to start when it comes to building, remodeling, or refreshing a mudroom.     Mudroom in the McGee House       Mudroom at the Bay House       Mudroom at the Mountainside Retreat       The Modern Mudroom on a PC       The Homestead in Arizona       Mudroom at the Ranch House       Mudroom at...

Home Improvement Projects to Make Your House Shine

Home Improvement Projects to Make Your House Shine

In my most optimistic times, I feel I can achieve all of my wildest DIY ambitions. Painting on a large scale for a blank wall? I'm on it. A rattan planter crafted by hand to dangle from my ceiling? I'll be able to make it quickly. Bergamot-scented candles and lightly drifting dried, pressed flowers? In practice? I'm an expert at conducting Google searches and drawing up huge plans that are seldom, if ever, realized. I live my home design life in an optimistic DIY bubble, then all too frequently buy already-made products before even attempting a trip to the craft shop. Unfortunately, spring has here, and spring? It's all about new beginnings. Fresh starts. Attempting things that previously appeared to be too tough. And, while I'm no DIY pro yet, I still have ambitions. Fortunately for me (and for all of you), the Internet is full of people who DIY with ease and charm...and they have the results to show it.   Allow me to offer eight design project ideas from DIY pros today,...

SPACIOUS ROOMS

SPACIOUS ROOMS

This week, we have not just lovely spaces but also some creative ideas, including one of the classic – I wish I'd thought of that's... So let's start with this Swedish kitchen and traditional checkerboard floor.         When I wrote about Charlotte Perriand a while back, I mentioned that she developed a little kitchen with sliding doors and wondered why it wasn't popular anymore. It appears to be from the 1950s, but despite the fact that houses are growing smaller and sliding doors are fantastic space savers, there hasn't been much of a rebirth. I get that it would be more difficult on the bottom because it relies on a continuous line of units to provide the doors somewhere to glide to, and drawers or an oven would get in the way, but why not on the top? I have open shelves in my kitchen partially because you risk striking someone on the head if you open a wall cabinet, or having to ask them to move if you want to reach for anything in the cupboard next to...

This luxurious Palo Alto home blends Indian and Italian culture with California flair

This luxurious Palo Alto home blends Indian and Italian culture with California flair

Sindhu Peruri wanted to combine the family's Italian and Indian heritage while designing the interiors of their new home in Palo Alto, California. The Los Altos-based designer adds, "There are a lot of parallels [between them]." "I wanted the interiors and furnishings to represent their relaxed yet refined way of life." Peruri used a neutral palette with jewel tones to generate "little moments of vibrance," such as the emerald green Kintsugi wallpaper in the powder room vestibule and glimpses of amethyst in Caroline Lizzaraga's custom paintings. The designer successfully mixed Italian antiques and old embroidered linens from Jaipur to create a style and mood that was perfectly suited to their California aesthetic. Peruri observes, "The details are modest and don't dominate." The home's neutral setting also serves as a backdrop for the designer's amazing art collection, which he helped assemble. "In San Francisco, we went to a few galleries. We strolled into Simon...
